Champ Hood was a unique human, a Texas Maestro Musician. He made great impact in the Texas music world initially in Uncle Walt's Band (Walter Hyatt, David Ball, & Champ) during the late 70s and early 80s. He anchored a residency gig at the legendary 'EMMAJOES' along with Butch Hancock, David Rodriguez, Ray Wylie Hubbard, and Jimmie Dale Gilmore. He appeared on numerous albums. Working steadily in and around Austin, as a member of Blaze Foleys' band, Mandy Merciers' band, Sarah Elizabeth Campbells' band, and in duo with David Halley, he also toured occasionally with Lyle Lovett in the 80s & 90s. He was inducted into the Texas Music Hall of Fame and lead the second incarnation of the Threadgill's Restaurant's Wednesday night Singin' and Supper Sessions backed by the Threadgill Troubadours (Marvin Dykhuis, David Heath, and Ron Erwin). In the 90s he was also beloved sideman for Toni Price, (with Casper Rawls, John "Mambo" Traenor, Papa Mali, Scrappy Newcomb, Rich Brotherton, & Matt Giles). For Champ, the music was what it was all about. Champ passed away on November 3, 2001, just before the dawn. We all miss him so very much. His debut solo recording was released January 20, 2002, and is a must have recording for the audiophile.
